Republic of Tatarstan belongs to the Volga federal district. Its capital city is the city of Kazan.

The Republic borders on Samara, Ulyanovsk, Kirov and Orenburg regions, as well as Bashkortostan, Chuvashia, Udmurtia and Mari El.

Tatarstan includes three agglomerations – Kazan, Naberezhnye Chelny and Almetyevsk, and is the eighth most populous federal subject in Russia.

Natural, historical, archaeological and cultural sights of the Republic attract here a great number of tourists.

Volzhsko-Kamsky reserve is located in the territory of Tatarstan. Here there are more than 70 species of vascular plants and 68 types of vertebrate animals. The Nizhnyaya Kama National Park is also located in the Republic.

The well-known Kazan Kremlin is one of the main sights of Tatarstan.

Bolgar, a site of ancient settlement which was Volzhskaya Bulgaria's ancient capital, is situated in the Republic. And the Chistopol district of Tatarstan has the remains of the ancient Golden Horde town named Dzhuketau.
